In true celebration of our Great British countryside, the Lowther Show will host a selection of traditional rural crafts on 13th and 14th August in the stunning grounds of Lowther Castle.
A range of traditional rural crafts will be demonstrated at Lowther and each craftsman and woman will be on hand to offer their skill and expertise.
The British Stickmakers Guild, MSC Wood Products, Owen Jones with Oak Swill Baskets, Willowpool Design and Bushcraft with Barry Jackson will all feature at this August’s Lowther Show. Here’s a little bit more about them…
British Stickmakers Guild
Established in 1984, The British Stickmaker’s Guild was set up by a small group of people interested in the ancient craft of making canes and walking sticks. Now a national organisation, the Guild has grown to house over 2000 members, and is set to showcase their inspiring works of art at this year’s Lowther Show.
MSC Wood Products
Retired tree nurseryman Mick Cole is MSC Wood Products. Welcoming Mick and his wonderful collection of handmade wooden products at this year’s Lowther Show, visitors will be able to pick up a unique piece of traditional art and start their own walking stick collection.
Owen Jones – Oak Swill Baskets
Owen Jones was taught to make swills in 1988 by a retired ‘Swiller’ from Broughton-in-Furness, called John Barker. John served his time in a 1930’s swill shop and when Owen met him he was one of the last swillers from that generation who was still making them.
Willowpool Design
Willowpool Designs began with Steve Fuller as Hedgerow Baskets based in Longtown, Cumbria almost 30 years ago. Steve later moved to Canonbie in Scotland near to a famous fishing pool called Willowpool on the river Esk. The business evolved into Willowpool Baskets as many of Steve’s willows were gathered from beside the river.
Barry Jackson – Bushcraft
Amongst the many people showcasing their country crafts this year, Barry Jackson will once again bring his superb Bush Craft demonstration along with Coracle making, a fun hobby that shows you how to make your own boat.
